  • The Dance Centre names roof garden for David Y H Lui

The rooftop garden at the Scotiabank Dance Centre at Davie and Granville in Vancouver has been named in honour of David Y. H. Lui.

On Saturday, October 3, PAL resident David Y H Lui celebrated his 65th birthday on the rooftop terrace of The Dance Centre. Thankfully, the weather gods cooperated and the afternoon party was filled with friends and dance lovers of all stripes. The formalities were MC’d by PAL’s own Dave Abbott and featured tributes from Max Wyman, Grant Strate and Stephanie Friedrich.

Associated since 1972 with professional dance in Vancouver, Lui was honoured for his work as an impresario and producer as well as his involvement with numerous dance organizations including Ballet BC and The Dance Centre. He was positioned upon a throne so that all could pay homage. And pay, they did. Friends in attendance made donations toward restoration of the rooftop garden for the use of dancers in Vancouver who require a breath of fresh air in the midst of the bustle of downtown traffic.

Congratulations, David, from your pals at PAL!

Best theatre in the sky that isn’t a lightning storm

Performing Arts Lodge Theatre
581 Cardero Street
604-255-4312

Walk into an inconspicuous apartment building in Coal Harbour and get onto the elevator to the top floor if you want to find one of the city’s coolest theatres, the Performing Arts Lodge (PAL) Theatre. This past year alone it has housed terrific performances of Palace of the End and John and Beatrice, to name a few. During intermission, you can wander around on the rooftop garden, maintained by the residents of the lodge, whose mission is to provide affordable housing to seniors and the disabled from the performing arts and related professions. An intimate venue, great theatre, and a good cause make PAL Vancouver one of the best penthouse suites around.

Hosting the annual Arts Fête at the Alliance for Arts and Culture, columnist and popular

host Fred Lee announced Jane Heyman, President of PAL Vancouver, as the

2008 Board Member of the Year. “Her focus has always been the residents, but with an eye

firmly on PAL’s future. She has done this with warmth, focus, and countless hours of her

life with no remuneration. She is a pleasure to work with, and a constant help to every

committee of the board, and within the building,” announced Lee. “Her only reward has been to

see this dream come true.” The Board Member of the Year was introduced to the

Arts Fête in 2007 by the Society to Bridge Arts and Community.
