Imagine a place where seniors can not only age with dignity but continue to create, perform, and inspire—PAL Vancouver is turning this vision into a reality for artists in the heart of one of Canada's most expensive cities. Affordable & independent housing for seniors in a creative community in Vancouver and our newly opened second building in New Westminster.
The negative impact of isolation on age-related illness and disease is well understood. We decided to do something to about it.
PAL Vancouver offers an innovative solution for members of the professional arts and allied industries who often can lose touch with the vibrant, dynamic collective that underpins so much of the creative efforts that we all enjoy. Our mission is to provide long-standing members of Metro Vancouver’s performing arts professions with affordable housing in a vibrant and creative community setting.

What makes PAL Vancouver's model unique?
Consistent with research on healthy ageing, PAL Vancouver offers so much more than social housing—providing residents with both a safe, affordable home and a supportive dynamic environment where they can stay active and creatively engage in the community.
Our focus on creativity and the arts makes us unique among social housing providers in BC. The sense of community, support, safety and security we provide is one of the reasons PAL was awarded a prestigious CMHC Best Practices in Affordable Housing Award in 2008.
Living with other seniors in a building that integrates creative spaces and social areas fosters a sense of belonging and purpose that can be life-saving when dealing with isolation as seniors age. It also gives them a purpose and keeps them engaged in creative projects by collaborating with other residents, bouncing ideas off each other and benefiting from being in a like-minded community.

Three examples of senior housing in Canada
Conventional Senior Housing such as retirement homes and assisted living facilities provides safe environments where seniors can get medical care and assistance with daily tasks they struggle to do independently and be surrounded by others in a similar circumstance. For seniors who have not contributed to a retirement savings plan during their careers or experienced job instability, these facilities can exceed their budget.
Government-supported housing can bridge the gap for those who need a cheaper option but there are challenges related to access (the facilities not being where seniors want to live) and availability (not enough facilities to accommodate the growing number of seniors needing housing). Check out BC Housing as an example.
Senior co-housing is where multiple seniors share a common space while maintaining private living areas, but these can be hard to find and again, affordability can be a barrier.
These examples highlight a few key challenges facing seniors in Canada. Firstly, the affordability crisis is especially prevalent in high-cost cities like Vancouver. Next, the demand for subsidized housing far exceeds the available supply. Lastly, living in an environment that doesn't meet some of their core personal needs for wanting a creative community around them can lead to social isolation and mental health problems that can ultimately become a factor in a shorter lifespan.
Global examples of innovative housing models for seniors
The UK's Independent Creative Living is in its idea phase, but it's nonetheless an impressive project that aims to provide independent & affordable housing for older artists across all art forms.
Netherland's De Hogeweyk, a dementia village that blends care and independence so that seniors live in a community that looks like a small village.
PAL Vancouver is meeting various needs within our communities and reflects how a combination of community, creativity and compassion can all work together to allow seniors to thrive. We aim to continue expanding and operating more buildings in the coming years to meet the demands of our long waitlist. In order to house more residents, we rely on the generous support of our donors and friends. As always, a huge and heartfelt round of applause to our donors—we simply could not do it without you!
